Guānxì (关系): The Key to Successful Business in China. A Literature Review for Foreign Direct Investment in China.
Touted as the holy grail of doing business in the world’s second largest economic powerhouse, China, guānxì (关系) continues to be the catalyst for the success of foreign businesses entering and operating in the China market.

Commonly interpreted as creating and maintaining relationships, this arguably elusive concept continues to be heralded as the key to gaining competitive advantages in the world's most coveted business economy, as highlighted in the chosen research. Employing various theories, including Porter’s strategic alliances and diamond theory and drawing on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, the following critiques highlight research of management issues and trends pertaining to Marketing, Strategy, and measuring business performance in International Business built on guānxì (关系).
Delving Deeper into Guānxì 关系
1. Theoretical Frameworks Applied
The employment of Porter's strategic alliances and diamond theory provides profound insights into how guānxì impacts competitive positioning. Porter's strategic alliances theory, when integrated with the guānxì context, showcases how businesses can use local partnerships and relationships to access resources, opportunities, and crucial market insights. Meanwhile, the diamond theory's emphasis on factors such as demand conditions, firm strategy, structure and rivalry, as well as related supporting industries, can be interpreted in the Chinese market through the lens of guānxì.
2. Cultural Dimensions and the Role of Guānxì
Hofstede’s cultural dimensions illuminate how power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism vs. collectivism, and masculinity vs. femininity play pivotal roles in business environments. In the Chinese context, understanding these dimensions is vital. The practice of guānxì intertwines deeply with these dimensions, emphasizing the importance of respect, hierarchy, and group harmony in establishing and nurturing business relationships.
3. Trends in Marketing, Strategy, and Business Performance
In the arena of marketing, guānxì reflects in personalized campaigns, understanding the consumer base, and building trust through endorsements from local influencers or known entities. Strategically, guānxì serves as the foundation for entry decisions, partnership formations, and navigating regulatory landscapes. In terms of performance, businesses that manage to harness the power of guānxì have shown more resilience, better market penetration, and increased profitability in the Chinese market.
Historically, guānxì has been inherent in Chinese society and touched on in Western literature. However, it is only in the last four decades, with China’s rapid economic expansion and opening to the West, that much research has been done about the importance of guānxì on foreign business performance in China. Most of the research I studied followed a well-structured framework. A commonality across the research chosen is that conducting longitudinal studies would have provided a more in-depth analysis of change and development, allowing for a measure of control to gain a richer source of data to test and develop theories related to guānxì and its impact on international business. Furthermore, it is pivotal to incorporate more Chinese perspectives in data analysis, acknowledging differing cultural dimensions.
